Judge Perry denied the motion and the defense would begin presenting their case that today. Blood might have been found from the decomposition of the remains in the trunk among the fluids released, if there was a hole in the bags the prosecution claimed the remains were wrapped in.

The examiner also described the lack of conclusive DNA evidence on the duct tape found on the remains. The trial continued with testimony from forensic pathologist Werner Spitz, author of what many consider to be the authoritative text on medicolegal death investigation.

One reason to place duct tape on the skull at that point might be to hold the jawbone on while the body is moved. That plant evidence, therefore, does not suggest the body was there for six months, as the prosecution alleges—however, it also does not exclude the possibility.

After this, a session was cancelled by Judge Perry after arguments between attorneys and a scramble on the part of the defense to produce a witness after their first two were rejected. The next session was expected to be short. This witness explained the chloroform they found in the trunk was surprising in a location like that, and that he and Vass were unable to find an explanation for its presence in the test. As the trial continued quite a bit forensically was introduced.

A chemist testified that the air samples from the car contained mostly gasoline, and that the other chemicals were not positively associated with decomposition because other natural sources exist. A forensic geologist discussed soil samples from shoes taken from the Anthony home, saying no evidence was present linking any of the shoes to the site where the remains were found—however, such soil evidence can easily fall off, so this lack means little.

A toxicologist explained that the hair mass found with the remains did not show evidence of drugs, but that it was not tested for chloroform. Still more witnesses testified about chloroform and hair samples.

There was some discussion of her records from work, however, which showed she was working at the time the searches were made, so it was up to the jury whether they found her testimony convincing. The motion was filed, and Perry immediately had Anthony examined by three psychologists. He announced that, having reviewed the reports of the experts, Anthony was competent and the trial would continue.

The defense claimed he found the body far earlier and moved it to its final location to get a reward, a claim which he denied on the stand. They had a difficult time proving this history, however, as the only witness who connected Anthony to any molestation was her ex-fiancee, and his testimony was not allowed by Judge Perry.

This opened the door for the prosecution to bring in his suicide note as evidence during rebuttal, and that is exactly what they did. On June 30th, the defense in the Casey Anthony trial rested its case, and July 1st the prosecution began its rebuttal, expecting to finish by the end of the day.

Perry declared there would be no court on July 2nd, and closing statements would be made on Sunday July 3rd, allowing the jury to begin deliberation by the holiday. They argued that the defense theory of the case—that Caylee died in an accidental drowning covered up by her grandfather—was illogical. On July 5th, they pick up where they left off after six hours the day before.

They found her guilty of the four counts of giving False Information to Law Enforcement with which she was charged, but not guilty of the murder and child abuse counts. This probation is for her check fraud conviction, unrelated to the murder trial that made her famous. Among other things, her probation forbids her to consume drugs or alcohol, associate with known criminals, or own a firearm, and she must report regularly to a probation officer. Her lawyers are fighting the motion in court. However, the defense attorneys argued this was an unfair amount to expect her to pay especially since she was only charged with four counts of lying to the police. This limitation restricts her from being billed for any murder investigation or prosecution costs.

I thought the state had proved its case. I thought, while they may have had some flaws in their case, that there was a high probability that Casey would be found guilty of some form of homicide, and that did not occur. The thenyear-old single mother from Orlando, Florida, was revealed to have spun a web of lies to cover up for the disappearance of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, that summer; the Facebook photos of her partying around town and a dearth of emotion in interviews fueling the charges of first-degree murder before Caylee's body was discovered later that year.

However, there would be no closure for those outraged by a mother's neglect of her child, as Casey escaped conviction in , while the questions of who killed her young daughter and why were never resolved. Caylee arrives after Casey's repeated denials to other family members about her pregnancy. Caylee was raised in the Orlando home of her grandparents, Cindy and George Anthony, but the day after an alleged family argument on Father's Day, June 15, Casey leaves with her young daughter and rebuffs efforts to reconcile in person.

After learning that a family car used by Casey had been impounded, George retrieves the car and is overwhelmed by the smell that remains even after a bag of trash is removed from the trunk.

Cindy tracks down her daughter later that day and, over a string of calls, reports that Caylee has been missing for a month, demands Casey's arrest and notes the vehicle's odor, saying, "It smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car. Casey leads investigators on a pair of wild goose chases, first to the uninhabited apartment of a nanny named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, who allegedly ran off with Caylee on June 9, and then to Universal Studios, where Casey pretended to have a job.

She is arrested and charged with child neglect, lying to investigators and interfering with a criminal investigation. July 22, Casey is declared a 'person of interest' at a bond hearing. The hearing introduces evidence that a cadaver dog had zeroed in on the odor of human decomposition in the car trunk and the Anthonys' backyard, as well as Cindy's admission that they had all seen Caylee after June 9.

The reversal comes a day after Casey's arrest for allegedly stealing and cashing checks from a friend, with the angry crowds demonstrating outside the Anthonys' home contributing to the decision. What can I say? Anthony will again be released after other parties combine to post the bond on September 5, although she will return to jail by the end of the month. The unsealed indictment also charges her with aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter and four counts of providing false information to law enforcement.

In response, Casey's lawyer, Jose Baez, says his client's actions will become clearer at trial: "I sincerely believe when we have finally spoken, everyone, and I mean everyone, will sit back and say, now I understand, that explains it. October 24, Forensic reports from an examination of Casey's car are released.

The reports note that a hair strand discovered in the trunk is "microscopically similar" to those found on Caylee's brush and showed "characteristics of apparent decomposition. The bones are found in a bag in a wooded area less than a half-mile from the Anthonys' home by utility worker Ray Kronk.
