Where is dreamworks animation studios

The studio's success in animation led to Katzenberg leaving the DreamWorks venture entirely in , taking the animation division with him, and DWA became its own, publicly-traded studio and remained so for over a decade. As a result, DWA struck a separate distribution deal with Paramount thereafter, freeing them of any obligations with their former parent company. In addition to the increasingly blatant Stunt Casting , their films became notorious for being simply conduits for pop-culture references and toilet humor and predictable plots.

With the notable exception of 's Over the Hedge , nearly every film DWA put out in the middle of the 's was savaged by critics — though they still performed well at the box office usually beating contemporary Disney CGI films. Shark Tale holds the distinction of being the worst-reviewed DreamWorks animated film.

Madagascar generally got mediocre reviews and, though it made a healthy enough profit to spawn two sequels, did not have as much financial success as the first two Shrek films. The studio arguably hit its nadir in with Shrek the Third and Bee Movie disappointing at least critically, and Aardman breaking away from DreamWorks after the release of Flushed Away. Beginning in however, the studio grew its beard with a new crop of films arising with a greater focus on story, characters, and quality.

So far, this new direction has been paying off handsomely in the box office worldwide. For instance, not only was the classic Kung Fu Panda released, but Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa marked the transition as that franchise moved from a hastily pre-emptive strike against Disney 's The Wild to become a gradually improving series with its own voice.

Originally arch-rivals with Disney in the s , they became arch-rivals with Pixar in the s , and now they're kind-of sort-of arch-rivals with both studios in the s. Disney alum Jeffrey Katzenberg produced more animated films through his studio alone than Walt Disney did when he was alive! Furthermore, KFP 2 out-grossed Cars 2 in the box office worldwide. In short, Katzenberg's dream had come true. On the business side, the company's distribution contract with Paramount was not renewed at the end of as that company began getting back into animation itself after the success of Rango.

DWA went to 20th Century Fox as its distributor from to , which resulted in a balancing act with animated films from Fox subsidiary and rival Blue Sky Studios. Considering that DWA planned 12 films in four years, that had been quite a scheduling challenge. In , the studios' next film and their first at 20th Century, The Croods , proved a big sustained worldwide hit with some decent critical reception , and the studio scored a great exclusive big time content deal with Netflix to help earn a steadier income so they didn't have primarily risk their solvency on feature films, though at the expense of their previous deal with HBO.

Unfortunately, their next two films, Turbo and Mr. In , DWA acquired the distribution rights to all of its pre theatrical films from Paramount. The rights were consequently licensed to Fox in conjunction with their distribution deal. The studio's sole success in was the highly promising How to Train Your Dragon 2 , which surpassed the total grosses of their four previous films as well as its predecessor.

Their follow-up Penguins of Madagascar once again underperformed although it grossed more than Turbo and Mr. Around this time, Katzenberg sought to find a better partner for the studio, having tried to negotiate with two companies in for a sale. The Japanese corporation SoftBank and later the toy company Hasbro were interested in taking control of the studio, but both companies pulled out of negotiations after Katzenberg demanded a higher-than-average asking price from both companies Softbank invested in Legendary Pictures instead, and Hasbro pulled out because they also had made a deal with Disney, who were not all that fond of the idea in the first place.

This made any prospect of a sale unlikely for the next two years. Meanwhile, DreamWorks continued to search for new ways to expand its entertainment offerings. In June of , it acquired all of the trademarks, associated copyrights and programming content of the Felix the Cat character from Felix the Cat Productions, run by the Oriolo family.

These acquisitions, while profitable, failed to change the direction of the studio considerably. Three years later, DreamWorks SKG created DreamWorks Animation, a new business division that would regularly produce both types of animated feature films. Due to the success of CGI animated films, DWA decided the same year to exit hand-drawn animation business after the next two of total four hand-drawn films. Beginning with Shrek 2 , all released films, other than some co-produced with Aardman, were expected to be produced with CGI.

Katzenberg headed the new division, while Spielberg and Geffen remained on board as investors and consultants. They made an agreement with their former parent to distribute all of their films until they deliver twelve new films, or December 12, , whichever came last. The agreement granted Paramount the worldwide rights to distribute all animated films, including previously released films, until the delivery of 13 new animated feature films or December 31, , whichever came last.

DWA's partnership with Aardman ended after the release of Flushed Away in November , having delivered three out of five films. The announcement was made before the film's release, on October 3, citing "creative differences". On March 13, , DreamWorks Animation announced it would release all of its films, beginning with Monsters vs.

Aliens , in stereoscopic 3D. The unit is owned by Technicolor, but DreamWorks hires and trains the animators, who then contribute to DreamWorks projects. Eventually they started contributing to DreamWorks' feature films as well, beginning with animating part of Puss in Boots As the only entertainment company on the list, they ranked 47th in , 6th in , 10th in , 14th in , and 12th in The company is praised by its employees for its openness, culture of collaboration, and a free breakfast and lunch, a perk not found at many other companies.

Beginning in , the studio had planned to release five feature films over the course of every two years, but the next year the studio revisited their plans, "but beyond , Katzenberg said the studio will play it by ear, even if that means abandoning his proclamation that DWA would try to release three pictures in a single year, every other year. The same year, the company purchased the film rights to the Trolls franchise. In August , DreamWorks Animation formed a joint venture with Chinese investment companies to establish a Shanghai-based entertainment company, named Oriental DreamWorks, to develop and produce original Chinese films and their derivatives.

The report also mentioned a possibility where Sony would handle the United States distribution while 20th Century Fox would handle the international distribution. Renewal of the deal with Paramount was also open, but only with more favorable terms for Paramount.

In August , DreamWorks Animation signed a five-year distribution deal with 20th Century Fox for both domestic and international markets. However, the deal did not include the distribution rights of previously released films, which DWA acquired from Paramount later in DreamWorks Animation, which has "big plans for the franchise", has become the exclusive worldwide licensor of the merchandise rights, except for Scandinavia, where Dam Things remains the licensor.

The next month, DWA announced a multi-year content deal to provide hours of exclusive original content to the video on demand Internet streaming media provider, Netflix. Part of the intent of the deal was in part to establish a more reliable income for DWA to defray the financial risk of solely relying on the theatrical film market. The next year, in February, DreamWorks announced the foundation of a new publishing division called DreamWorks Press, to publish books in print and digital form.

DreamWorks Animation then purchased Paramount's distribution rights to the pre library in July, and since then, DreamWorks Animation's current distributor 20th Century Fox has assumed distribution rights to the library.

The studio was reported to be acquired two separate times in the end of The proposal reportedly calls for the combined company to take the name "DreamWorks-Hasbro" and for Jeffrey Katzenberg to become its chairman, but as a matter of policy, neither Hasbro nor DWA publicly comment on mergers and acquisitions.

Two days later, the talks were reported to have fallen through. DreamWorks Animation announced their launch into the television broadcasting business on December 9, , by creating their own channel called The DreamWorks Channel. With HBO Asia handling affiliate sales, marketing and technical services, the network will launch in several Asian countries except China and Japan in the second half of The channel first premiered in English on August 1, , and a Thai-dubbed channel launched in September To succeed, DWA recognized that it needed to draw upon expertise outside its own ranks.

The animation creation process demands high fidelity, low latency and sound synchronization not needed in typical remote workforce desktop access. Working directly with artists, the DXC team experimented with configurations until the optimal solution and key parameters for peak remote performance were identified and optimized to create an in-studio work experience.

That collaboration also highlighted ways to improve overall user experience. Business continuity was always one of the benefits of expanding into a virtual working environment. But, Wike recalls, no one at the time realized how important it would be.

In mid-March , the importance of a robust continuity plan became readily apparent. Wide-scale shutdowns and stay-at-home orders meant many studios would need to halt work. To succeed, DWA realized that artists must embrace new digital solutions and workflows. For example, the team spent a lot of time experimenting with solutions to synchronize the audio with the animation to a high degree of accuracy. Swanborg agrees, adding that the partnership with DXC is helping the company manage its current remote workflow challenges while working toward its future vision of a distributed development pipeline.
