Young Anastasia is seen wrapped in the warm bosom of her family; then disaster strikes, and she spends years in a cruel orphanage, losing all memory of her earlier days. Then as a lithe and spirited teenager, she falls into the clutches of two con men named Dimitri John Cusack and Vladimir Kelsey Grammer. They both worked in the royal court and have insider knowledge; their scheme is to tutor an imposter until she can fool the Dowager Empress. The irony, which the movie makes much of, is that this impostor is, in fact, the real thing.

Much depends on how colorful the villain is, and the mad monk Rasputin Christopher Lloyd is one of the best cartoon villains in a long time. The real Rasputin became infamous for taking so long to die--he was almost unkillable--and in this movie version he likewise lingers between life and death. His spirit burns on, but his body parts have a disconcerting habit of falling off. His little sidekick Bartok, an albino bat voiced by Hank Azaria, tirelessly screws missing limbs back into place.

Anastasia has a friend, too: Her little dog Pooka, who faithfully tags along. Indeed, every important character is assigned a sidekick; Dimitri has Vladimir, and the Dowager Empress has her faithful lady-in-waiting, Sophie Bernadette Peters. By the movie's end, Dimitri wins Anastasia, Vladimir wins Sophie, and I guess we can be relieved that the filmmakers spared us the Bartok-Pooka nuptials.

During the storming of the palace the tsar and his family try to flee the palace however Anastasia having realized that she forgotten her music box runs in the opposite direction of her family back to her bedroom to retrieve it.

The dowager empress runs after her, while in Anastasias bedroom they hear gunshot indicating that Bolsheviks have murdered the tsar and the rest of his family.

Moments later Anastasia's bedroom is stormed by the Bolsheviks one of whom knocks dimitri unconscious with the butt of his rifle, but dimitri actions help Anastasia and her grandmother escape the palace, however Anastasia loses her music box in the process. Dimitri saves the music box in hopes of remembering the royal family. While running across a frozen pond, the dowager empress and Anastasia are stopped by Rasputin who attempts to murder Anastasia himself.

He jumps from the bridge, consumed with rage he feels an animalistic urge to end her life with his bare hands so he drops the reliquary and forces himself on top of the young Romanov. Her grandmother screams for help and rushes to her aid right as she feels the heavy hand of Rasputin clasp tight around her foot. She flips over and begs for his mercy but the evil man growls with pleasure scraping her ankle along the thin ice.

Her snow covered toes pressing against his hairy chin made her crawl with fear as he threatens her life once more. Before he makes any more advances in killing her, he falls through the ice and drowns. Anastasia and her grandmother eventually reach a moving train, but only the dowager empress is able to get on as Anastasia trips and is knocked unconscious from hitting her head on the station platform leaving her with amnesia, forcing her grandmother to leave her behind.

Ten years later, in , Russia is now under Communist rule; Anastasia's grandmother, now back in Paris, has offered a monetary reward for anyone who can return Anastasia to her. Elsewhere, an amnesiac eighteen-year-old orphan girl named Anya Meg Ryan who owns the same necklace as Anastasia, has just left her orphanage and has decided to learn about her past, because she has no recollection of the first eight years of her life.

Accompanied by Pooka , a stray puppy, she heads to Saint Petersburg, and soon encounters Dimitri and Vladimir, who recruit her as their "fa,ke" Anastasia. During the trip to Paris, the two men teach Anya how to behave like Anastasia and Anya and Dimitri realize a mutual attraction.

Ever since, I have been interested in the story of Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanov, her life, and her untimely death. While I know the movie is not historically accurate, I don't care! The movie is fiction after all- based on a true story of Anastasia's rumored escape and women who claimed to be her , loosely, mind you- but perhaps it is not as unlikely as it seems: when the remains of the Romanovs were discovered back in , Alexei her brother,the Czarvitch and one of the Grand Duchesses were missing.

And with age analysis of the bones, scientists believe that the missing daughter is in fact Anastasia, and not one of her sisters, Olga, Tatiana, or Maria. But who really knows what happened?

Dimitri drags Marie to see Anastasia, who regains her memories as they converse. Convincing the empress of her identity, the two are joyfully reunited. Marie offers Dimitri the reward money the next day, recognizing him as the servant boy who saved them from the siege; to her surprise, he refuses it and leaves for Russia. At Anastasia's return celebration, Marie informs her of Dimitri's gesture, leaving Anastasia torn between staying or going with him. Dimitri returns to save her, but is soon injured and knocked unconscious.
